With the recent plunge of Tech-giant Samsung, into the affordable midrange segment with the launch of M20 , M30 ,A30 & A50 mobiles .The Tech-market is buzzing around with strength and weakness comparisons of each, especially putting up a duel with their arch-rivals Chinese brands which are offering exceptional hardware configurations at better prices. Samsung too has tried to offer its best to match up with the competition.

MY VIEW - COMPARISON TO REDMI NOTE 7 PRO :

I have been the proud owner of Samsung flagship phones all my life , so a little biasing can be expected but nevertheless , no one can deny the prowess of the redmi phones in this segment.

I haven’t exactly used Redmi 7 pro but comparing on technical specs :

Redmi pros over A50 :

1. Superior Sony IMX586 Sensor for 48 MP photography. ( actual software integration and final results unknown to me)
2. Gorilla glass 5 in front against inferior dragon tail glass from asahi in Samsung A50.
3. IR blaster. It can be used a remote for TV , AC etc. Absent in A50.
4. Super low light mode in camera ( no idea how grainy pic might come)
5. Q-Hd video recording in redmi , in A50 its only FHD.
6. Lesser price .

A50 pros over Redmi Note 7 pro :

1. Has faster & better power efficient processor 10 nm Exynos 9610 equivalent to SD 712 .Redmi note has SD 675 which is lower on computation speeds & power efficiency.
2. A50 is a triple camera setup & has additional wide angle view lens for 128 deg.view .
3. Not to say A50 Super Amoled beats Redmi IPS anytime.
4. A50 has 2 dedicated sim slots and 1 microSD slot expandable upto 512 GB.Redmi has hybrid sim slot with expansion upto 256 GB.
5. The Redmi back camera is protruded so the phone doesn’t rest straight over a flat surface along with risk of damage.
6. 7.7 mm thin weighs 166 gms against 8.1 mm redmi with weight 186 grams.
7. Higher penetration of service network and brand image of Samsung than xiaomi.

If you are planning to buy any of these recently launched M20,M30 or A30 or A50 , I would suggest extend your budget a little 4k bucks more and go for A50 instead as it offers better processor ,better camera & a better upgraded OS.

# Build : Comes thin at 7.7 mm & 166 grams. Protected by asahi dragon tail glass on the front , rear is premium plastic.

# Screen & bezels : Ultimate 6.4 inch Super amoled with 2340 x 1080 resolution.Bezels are too thin.

# Android version & UI – Android 9.0 pie.

# Sun legibility: Quite good . Auto brightness control and can go up to 700 nits in auto mode.

# Processor: Octa core , Samsung Exynos 9610 equivalent to SD 712.Constructed on 10 nm design so more power efficient and is highly fast for day to day jobs. No lags encountered.

# Speaker/ ringtone volume : Only one speaker below, Ringtone volume decent but could have been louder.

# Call connectivity ,volume and clarity : Excellent reception, Call volume and clarity .

# Security Locks : face unlock is pretty fast even in dark. In screen fingerprint sensor takes more than a blink and is improved with an update of 700 MB. Has become faster with greater number of recognitions but can be improved further.

# Camera : Can’t say best but definitely among Top ones in this price range.

1. Has low aperture of f/1.7 which gives good low light shots, clarity not the best but decent enough.
2. Color reproduction & clarity is very good in day light shots by main 25 MP camera
3. Shutter speed is very fast.
4. 25 MP Selfie camera is segment best with clear details and great bokeh effect.
5. 8MP Wide angle camera is a great benefit, though do not expect any clarity upon zoom.
6. Voice control to shoot snaps and videos is there.
7. Focussing not ultra-fast but still good at this price segment.
8. Video focus and shoot is good but is limited to FHD only. In dark without flash , Its very dark to shoot.

Overall at this price point an impressive Samsung camera and exceptional selfie camera

# Battery – 4000 mAh Li-po battery with almost 1.5 days - 2 days backup with regular media usage.

# Charger : USB type C , 15 watt / 9 V adaptive fast charge which is very fast though the included cable length is very short at just 2 feet approx.

# Gaming : Did not do much but for normal temple run was quite fast enough.

# Heating : Minor while gaming upto 39 deg with ambient temp. around 36 in summers.

# SD cards slots – Two independent SIM slots with additional microsd card slot expandable up to 512 gb. Both support 4g VoLTE.

# 3.5 mm jack – present

# Earphone ; one included is fragile in construction with thin wires but audio output is good enough.

# Multimedia & apps : Load times pretty fast .

# Water resistance – No

# No notifications light but with always on display can get a display.

# Samsung pass: for password storage is good.

# Haptic touch is good. & Every time the on screen has a different wallpaper which looks too good.

# Updates: received for Fingerprint recognition improvement, 68 degree front camera view and many features in camera, stability etc.

# Overall ease of operation: Being too big, its often an issue to hold and operate the topmost or the bottommost screen portions at same time yet not a deal breaker though.

All in all, A50 almost has the best of all worlds at this price point & if you are even a little skeptic of the Chinese brands reliability and performance. Buy A50 with confidence.

With the launch of mobiles in mid-range segment , Samsung has clearly expressed a welcome and much awaited interest to displace Chinese brand presence and A50 is just a starting.
