Kashmiris have a unique concept of wearing mangalsutras. Kashmiri women wear earrings made of gold woven in plain red thread that’s regarded as mangalsutras. These earrings are given to the bride by her parents during the wedding ceremony. After she goes to her husband’s place, her in-laws give the bride a gold chain that’s popularly called “aath”. So, the red thread in the earrings is replaced by the gold chain.

Kerala Mangalsutras

In God’s own country, the Hindu population calls the mangalsutra as “thaali” and the Christian population calls it as “minnu”. The minnu is basically a pendant with a cross symbol on a gold medallion that resembles the shape of a heart. While the heart symbolises the love that a couple shares, the cross symbolises the ideal relationship that a couple must strive for. Traditionally, the pendant is passed through seven strands of thread. The seven thread represent the couple, their parents and the church.

Tamil Mangalsutras

Tamilians often refer to the mangalsutra as Thaali. Mangala Dharanam is a popular ceremony in Tamil marriages where the groom puts a thali on his bride. Thali is also popular as Thirumangalyam, Mangalyam, Thaaly and Kodi. Thaali is available in a wide variety of shapes and designs. These shapes basically differ based on the family traditions and mythological beliefs. Often thaalis are imprinted with symbolic representations, such as the family deity, the Tulsi plant, Lord Shiva or Goddess Meenakshi. During a wedding ceremony, the thaali is worn with a yellow thread or a golden chain.

Telugu Mangalsutras

Telugu Mangalsutras are often characterized by two round-shaped discs or coins. Both, the groom’s side and the bride’s side gift each other a disc. During the wedding ceremony, the groom ties the two gold discs along with a thread around the bride’s neck. Traditionally, the groom is supposed to tie three knots. After sixteen days of the wedding, the groom or any elder member in the family can unite the two discs. These discs are connected using black and coral beads that are threaded in a gold wire. This ensures that the two discs don’t keep clashing against each other. It symbolises the physical, emotional and the spiritual connection between the couple.

Karnataka Mangalsutras

In Karnataka, especially the Coorg region, the Coorgi women adorn themselves with “Karthamani Pathak” as a symbol of marriage. Kodava brides hold the Karmani Pathak in high regards. The Pathak that represents the pendant usually features a gold coin engraved with Lakshmi or Queen Victoria symbols. The circumference of the pendant has small round rubies studded on it. The pendant also has a cobra surmounted on it, which symbolises fertility. Some intricate designs also have freshwater pearls hanging from it. Unlike the popular tradition, Kodava brides wear the “Karthamani Pathak” one day prior to their wedding. And, instead of the groom, the bride’s mother ties it to the bride’s neck.

Maharashtrian Mangalsutras

The Maharashtrians call it Vati Mangalsutra. The Vati Mangalsutra has a black beaded chain with two bowl-shaped vatis. The vatis represent Shiva and Shakti. The two strands of beads represent the husband and the wife. The two types of black beads are popularly known as “Nirgun” and “Shagun”. It is believed that these beads keep the evil eye away for a happy and prosperous marriage. Nirgun has the entire Mangalsutra chain made of black beads. The Shagun, on the other hand, has every nine black beads separated by two gold beads.
